Milwaukee Weekend

Last weekend Daddy took a day off of work and we spent a nice long weekend in Milwaukee.  It wasn't the warmest of weekends so it limited us to some of our activities but we made the bets of it.

On Friday we went straight to the Milwaukee Art Museum.  It was designed by a very famous architect and has a very unique design element to it.  It has 'wings' that open and close each day, weather depending.  It was quite windy the day we were there so we didn't get to see it open in person.  If you'd like to check it out there, there's a cool video to see how it really works: Burke Brise Soleil

Despite not seeing the wings, we had fun walking around the lobby and and checking out the view of the lake from the museum.  We also checked out the building next door which was designed by Eero Saarinen who just happens to have a dad named Eliel Saarinen!

For lunch, we checked out the Milwaukee Public Market.  It's a great indoor market in the middle of the city with lots of different types of food, fresh seafood, candy, wines and flower shops.  It's quite fun to loose yourself in although much harder to do with a hungry toddler!

The next day, we drove just outside the city to a small town and went to an apple farm.  We spent a cold, but very fun morning picking lots of different kinds of apples!  The last time Eliel went apple picking he was only about 8 months old so he wasn't able to walk or pick the fruit off the trees.  Lucky for us, these trees were quite small so we were able to find some apples low enough for Eliel to pick.  However, once he found the ladder, Eliel was all about climbing to find the apples higher on the tree.  He had a blast finding only the real red ones, riding in the tractor to and from the field and sampling the apples along the way.

After picking apples we went to their pumpkin farm and picked a nice round pumpkin that will hopefully prove fun to carve.  Eliel was also treated to some cute farm animals and had no problem feeding them out of the palm of his hand.  I'm sure he would have felt otherwise had they not been behind the cage though!

The following day we took a tour of the Sprecher's Brewery.  We thought it was going to be a fun tour through the factory to see how they brew and bottle their beer and soda, however it was a five minute walk through followed by as much soda as you could drink and samples of the beer brews.  Eliel was not feeling well so unfortunately he did not take advantage of the soda but mommy did!  Daddy also tried some of the hard root beer and said it was quite yummy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend away and our last vacation as a family of 3!
