Hiking in Starved Rock

To say I've been slow at updating the blog with our summer adventures would be incorrect.  I am WAY behind at keeping up.  I'm not really sure what has kept me from it but I will make an effort to stay more current. :)

After the 4th of July came and went, we escaped for another quick weekend getaway with friends to the Starved Rock area to do a little bit of hiking.  Our friends live in Indianapolis so it was a great spot to meet.  They have two girls similar in age to our boys so they all typically get along great.

We started off our weekend at Matthiessen State Park which is a favorite of ours.  The boys love being able to walk in the water as we travel through the creek beds.  We spent a few hours here and while the hike wasn't very strenuous, the kids all had a blast being able to get wet and dirty!

After a long day of driving and hiking, we all were excited to grab some dinner and were excited to find out that my best friend Nikki and her family were heading down to hang with us for the evening.  It became a huge family affair and everyone had a ball!

The next day, we headed to Starved Rock State Park for a morning hike before heading home.  This one was completely different from the day before and the kids loved taking turns leading the group through the trails.

It was a super hot weekend with temps in the upper 90's so after the morning, we were all dripping wet with sweat and ready to cool off on the drive home.  The boys said they had a blast and couldn't wait to hang with the girls again.  We'll have to make it a summer tradition!
